Stop HRC: The Coalition of Queer Activists who Challenge HRC

Why StopHRC.com?
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) does a lot of good work to make our communities and schools safer and more welcoming. We applaud the many dedicated, good-hearted employees and volunteers of HRC.

HRC also does a lot of work that divides our community and impedes our fight for full queer liberation and social justice. We aim to expose those actions and inspire LGBTQ activists to get involved with a more progressive movement for social justice.

HRC has a history of:

  • Supporting legislation that does not include Transgender people
  • Prioritizing assimilationist agenda (equal-marriage, DADT, and Hate Crimes legislation) over more pressing needs such as ENDA, Healthcare, Housing, HIV/AIDS, Queer Youth Support, prison issues, stopping war and occupation, and working with our social justice allies.
  • Endorsing candidates who are:
    • anti-choice
    • anti-environment
    • anti-immigrant
    • anti-labor
    • pro-war.
  • Endorsing conservative candidates over their more progressive challengers.
  • Not working well with organized labor. HRC has refused to endorse the Employee Free Choice Act (finally quietyly changed their mind on this too!) which has been endorsed by organizations ranging from the National Center for Transgender Equality to the NAACP. HRC has only recently decided to change venues from the Hynes Convention Center to the Sheraton after months of protest from Local 26 Unite Here! (hotel workers union). HRC hires non-unionized venues and caterers. One caterer, Aramark, has a long history of bad labor practices and discriminating against the LGBT community. Ironically, they have even received several very low scores from HRC's own "equality index." HRC partners with and promotes companies that sell goods that are produced by sweatshops, profit from war, discriminate, and donate to candidates who discriminate.

4 Shameful HRC Endorsements to Remember

  • Susan Collins (R) –With her support, the president (Bush) placed two Justices on the Court who have aligned themselves with the far-right, anti-gay ideology of Justices Scalia and Thomas. She supported the confirmation of Leslie Southwick, an anti-gay nominee to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, who voted to uphold the removal of a child from her mother's care largely because the child would be in a "lesbian home."
  • Al D'Amato (R) – Pro-life for the U.S. Senate. The endorsement of a man who had supported Reagan's budget cuts, the repeal of abortion rights, and criminal neglect of the AIDS carnage was an act of profound political amnesia
  • Joe Lieberman (I) – A supporter of John McCain, Supports War (HRC endorsed him over pro-gay marriage candidate and anti-war candidate Ned Lamont)
  • Mary Bono (R)- Rated 20% by NARAL, indicating a pro-life voting record. Rated 27% by the ACLU, indicating an anti-civil rights voting record. Rated 36% by NAACP, indicating a mixed record on affirmative-action. Rated 10% by the LCV, indicating anti-environment votes
  • Olympia Snowe (R) - This Republican has the power to weaken healthcare reform, and is considered a "moderate." She endorsed McCain and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. She was endorsed by HRC over a more progressive challenger.
