Hundreds of gay couples in New York State were married Sunday as the state became the sixth and largest to recognize marriage equality in America. The photo, above, of the illuminated American side of Niagara Falls, taken by Flickr user
Mykelle Nicole, has been passed around the Internet by thousands, including
Lance Bass, as a symbol of celebration. The
AP reports that Empire State Development Corp. estimates the legalization of marriage equality in New York will generate about $400 million in economic benefits statewide over three years. Take heed, poor states where marriage equality is illegal.
Meanwhile, last Thursday night, the Philadelphia Phillies announced that they will produce an "It Gets Better" video, becoming the seventh Major League Baseball (MLB) team to join the campaign in taking a stand against anti-gay bullying and homophobia. The San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, and Boston Red Sox have all made "It Gets Better" videos after being petitioned by their fans to do so on Change.org, and the Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners, and Washington Nationals (formerly the Montreal Expos, yay!) have announced they are making videos as well. Currently, there are no active, openly gay players in professional baseball.
