With Obama and the DOJ not defending section 3 of Doma I am wondering how long it will take this country to throw DOMA out completely. My Legal husband Robert and I have already filed our taxes as single since the Fed doesn't allow us to file married. We paid around $2600 more than we should have. Oh well, the government needs our money and their is hope for next year, right? My straight married friends don't really understand what DOMA has done to people like me. They smile and say "I'm sorry" for something that never should have been allowed to happen in the first place. They don't understand that it really is a civil rights issue. I tell them to look at their tax programs and check off single and see what happens to what they owe and what they get back. It is amazing looking at the difference. Getting rid of DOMA isn't just about filing status. It is about legitimizing a relationship and saying that two people want to be together for the rest of their lives. It is about being able to make decisions for your spouse if something were to happen. It is about being able to visit your spouse in the hospital without anyone saying that you can't. Straight people take these rights for granted. Times are changing and things are happening faster than I thought they would but it is far from over. I am hoping to see the end of DOMA soon but I think we still have an upward battle on our hands...

My question is this, "What are the benefits of denying the rights of LGBTQ persons to the (Hetero) community?". When they can answer this, without throwing a tourettes filled Biblical screed at us, or some other talking  points zombie regurgitation, perhaps they might have the deserved stigma of bigotry removed, or downgraded to simple ignorance.
