Attention San Francisco: Vote NO on Proposition D

Please forward widely to San Francisco residents.

Vote no on Proposition D.

Proposition D would allow corporations to plaster San Francisco's Market Street, between 5th and 7th, with advertisement billboards and lights. The measure would break-through a previous voter-approved ban on similar corporate advertising in the city.

Supporters say the measure will "clean up" market street, bring tourists and business, and help with the homelessness "problem." In fact, a mailing I received the other day had a picture of a homelessness person laying on the street on the cover. The inside lamented Market Street's urine stains and trash. And since a small percentage of the profits will support neighborhood arts programs, several leading democrats and non-profits have signed-on too.

The anti-homeless bias and fears being drummed up to pass this measure are reason enough to vote NO. I live on Market Street and I would much rather have a meaningful conversation with the local homeless people, than see Big Pharma's flashy billboard advertisements.

If we let corporations buy out our neighborhoods in exchange for their table scraps, we'll be screwed for a very long time. But, guess what! There is nothing in the measure to ensure our neighborhood gets the scraps!

If you really care about "cleaning up" the streets, offer homeless people real support and services - the support and services that have been cut from the city budget by some of the very people supporting this proposition. And while your're at it, plant some trees and improve our streets to make them more pedestrian friendly.

Join the Coalition on Homelessness and say NO to anti-homeless bias, and Vote NO on Proposition D.
