Are despair, hopelessness and depression direct products and functions of the American imperial project? Does the systemic violence of the Empire, at home and abroad, also have a psychic element? What is the psycho-social results of 'inter-generational trauma' in America, namely for the descendants of Slaves and Indigenous peoples? How do we grapple with these intense anti-democratic, anti-person structures and the attitudes they create and that help to - in circular fashion - reinforce the dominant structures. You see, I have a stake in this too. I am not here to 'help those people' or to 'fight for them, the Other' - I am here because my liberation is wrapped - as intricately as my skin over my bone - in the liberation of Black, Brown and Indigenous peoples. I am here because no matter how many dollars you have in your bank account, if you don't feel comfortable in your damn skin that green don't mean shit. I am here because I have realized a great spiritual revolution of our time, I am here, at this non-localizable 'place' of epiphany, and have been here for sometime. A radical idea. An essential idea. We must struggle for the liberation of all people, and this means not ignoring the painful realities of the past and the present. The system of racist, capitalist oppression that feeds off the backs of poor whites, Black and Brown people and Amerindians is the present reality. We must confront our community - the white community - to recognize the struggle. We must build inter-racial alliances that confront race, gender, sexual orientation, class and ability oppressions. We must fight for basic things like: Reparations to the descendents of Slaves, universal health care, an immediate end to the American imperial project and a turn towards real direct social democracy whereby the economy becomes owned by the people, and democracy is infused into the body politic. This is communalism. We are all alone, together.
