Don't support Human Rights Campaign!

When a group of us calling ourselves Occupy the Castro took over the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) store on December 3 to read a proclamation that the group needed to make housing, jobs and healthcare for all priorities on both the national and local levels, some folks were quick to criticize us. Why target a national gay organization that does some good things? these people asked. The question was answered a little over a month later (this past Saturday, February 4) when we went back to the store…See More

no "golden years" for queer seniors

The last thing in the world many LGBT people want to be is a queer senior. And with good reason: entering the “golden years” in the queer community can be like entering a living hell.  It means being dismissed by younger people as sexually and socially undesirable or being patronized because you’re a piece of living history. It’s being invisible in queer publications (except when you die and the gushing obits come out, saying what a great hero you once were, emphasis on “once”). It’s having the…See More

the other victims of 9/11

This is the text of a speech I gave today at the Castro's memorial to Mark Bingham... the other victims of 9/11by Tommi Avicolli Mecca They’re the countless civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq who have been murdered (and continue to be killed) by American bombs or by American soldiers since the invasion of their countries by the U.S. and its allies. Though they possessed no weapons of mass destruction nor any ties to the attack on the twin towers in New York City, President George Bush and the…See More

For homeless youth, it never gets better

The latest study coming out of Boston Children’s Hospital should shame politicians throughout this country who are cutting vital services to those in need, but I guarantee it won’t. It should also serve as yet another wake-up call to the queer community, which has not poured any substantial amount of money or effort into solving one of our most pressing problems. I don’t mean the lack of “marriage equality.” I’m talking about the epidemic of homelessness in our midst. In a recent survey of…See More

"Nice work! I would have loved to have been there. At least we have universal healthcare over here...but the issues of depression and youth suicide in the Queer community here just suck and never get covered of course. Neither does the homeless…"

my speech tonight at OSOF rally in Castro

I COME TODAY NOT TO MOURN OUR LOSSES, BUT TO CHALLENGE YOU TO FIGHT FOR REAL FULL EQUALITY.AS LONG AS THERE IS DISPARITY BETWEEN THE HAVES AND HAVE-NOTS IN OUR COMMUNITY, THERE IS NO FULL EQUALITYAS LONG AS 75% OF TRANSGENDERS IN THE BAY AREA ARE NOT FULLY EMPLOYED, THERE IS NO FULL EQUALITYAS LONG AS MAJOR STUDIES CONTINUE TO SHOW THAT OUR COMMUNITY IS AS POOR AS ANY OTHER AND IN SOME WAYS POORER, THERE IS NO FULL EQUALITYAS LONG AS 40% OF HOMELESS YOUTH IN SF IDENTIFY AS LGBT, AND ALMOST THE…See More
