Open Letter to Lauren Smiley @ SF Weekly

Dear Ms. Smiley,I'm a bit confused. It seems from your title that you're excited about having a transperson as a city supervisor but I can't figure out why. After the disaster of your "Border Crossing" article - the WANTED posters for you are still hanging about - it seems you would want to improve your reputation with the trans community.Obviously not so much.Let's start with the bublegum pink cover with heeled pumps and curlicue script. These are symbols of conventional, stereotypical…See More

The Breast of the Story

I had my first mammogram this year. It was awful. But it came back clean and I feel relieved but in no way less anxious about having to do this again. Two years ago I had a lump just to the left and below my left nipple, hard and irregular. I was 39 and had no health coverage. Like the 2% of breast cancer patients who are men, no one wanted to believe this was happening, especially me. I had access to Healthy San Francisco which I used to see a nurse. He told me that due to their restrictions…See More

!Vivo Rico Rizzo!

It’s not my fault I was born into a fundamentalist/pentacostal Christian home in the Midwest. Decades later, I’m still making up for gaps in my social education. While putting some final touches on fabric sculpture this week (that was supposed to go up in our exhibit except we lost our funding) I watched Midnight Cowboy. And when it ended, I was left wondering where our Ricos & Joes had gone in the decades following. What happened to all our stories about people dying from being poor? Why…See More
