Sadly, I am not in the Bay Area (I wish!). I live on the East Coast (Boston area). I do enjoy this conversation and wish we could talk in person about them.
I'd like to add that not all movements are started by "moderates" (which is a relative term). Some are, however, and that seems to be the case at this time. I was not trying to turn this into a hard and fast "law" of organizing, I just think we need to be aware of when it is happening. Your point is well taken, though. We need not assume all movements are formed this way.
Your comments have also prompted me to rethink the modern queer movement. Let's assume for a moment that the queer movement began in 1969. If the queer movement was radical in the beginning, it benefited from the overall cultural radicalization of the 1960s. The demands were formed in a social context of radicalism.
Today, in my view, radicals and the left are still disorganized and in retreat. It is an atmosphere of political conservatism and so the demands (and tactics) of the queer movement are also somewhat conservative.
