Profile Information

Who are you? (Creative answers encouraged!)
I'm a college student from Texas (born and raised). I'm majoring in History and minoring in Women's Studies and Arabic. I'm a liberal, bisexual, pro-choice, vegetarian feminist so I'm probably not your stereotypical Texan/Catholic. But yes, there are people like me in Texas. I'll be traveling to Egypt this summer to study Arabic at a center in Cairo.

So, here's what I'll probably write about in my blog: feminism, queer issues, vegetarianism, bisexuality/biphobia, Catholic reform, being a queer/pro-choice/etc Catholic, books, and whatever else interests me. And of course, I'll write about Cairo while I'm studying there.
Activism & Interests?
Activism: I'm a member of my school's feminist organization. I was recently voted Community Outreach Chair for the 08-09 school year. My friend and I are planning on starting a queer activism group on campus.

Interests: feminism, queer issues, vegetarianism, Catholic reform, linguistics (Arabic and Spanish), history, books, writing

Guerrilla Girls!!!! XD

Posted on February 11, 2009 at 4:00pm 0 Comments

The Guerrilla Girls came to my school last night to give a lecture! For those of you who aren't familiar with them, they're an amazing group of feminists artists who promote women and minorities in the arts. They started out in 1985 (the year I was born) putting up guerrilla posters about the lack of diversity in the art world. They wear gorilla masks and take on the names of dead female artists (Frida Kahlo and Kathe Kottwitz spoke last night). I'll… Continue

Back in the US

I'm back in the US. I had a great time in Egypt (despite the little bit of harrasment) and I saw a lot of sites. Just not the pyramids (I was going to go to the light show my last night there but shit happened). Anyway, I recommend going. I want to go back to see the pyramids, the museum and Alexandria.

Asalaam min Musr! (Hello from Egypt)

Hey everybody! I'm in Cairo, Egypt right now and I'm having a great time. I got here on May 26. The weather's really hot but (as I joke with the locals and my friends) it's a nice break from all the humidity in Houston.

I'm living in Cairo in Nasr City's 7th district. Right now I have an apartment by myself. There's an old lady and her daughter, Hind (22 years), who live next door. Hind knows English so she helps translate if I don't know the Arabic words for things. The weather is… Continue

regarding the lack of posts

Posted on May 3, 2008 at 9:59pm 1 Comment

Sorry I haven't posted much on here. I've been pretty busy lately - the semester's coming to an end so I've had projects and I've got my finals and moving out of my dorm this week. Of course, I'm also trying to get ready for Egypt. And a couple weeks ago my maternal Grandmother J was diagnosed with cancer (and we found out it's stage 4 on Wednesday).

But I should be back and posting after this Thursday

my Catholic-ness...

Posted on April 15, 2008 at 7:30pm 0 Comments

In honor of Pope Benidict XVI's visit to the US, I've decided to start my blog with a post on Catholicism. I realize that a lot of people have an idea of what Catholics are like - anti-choice, homophobic, conservative, etc. I think that it's important to give a Catholic perspective that's quite different from Bill Donahue's.

If you've read the "about me" section on my profile you've probably noticed that I'm not the… Continue

Hi Kat - thanks for your "Catholic-ness" post. Love it when we can help break the boxes of what our identities our "suppose" to mean.

But your about me section inspired me to ask you a question. How do you respond to people who are bi-phobic. I have twice in the last month had conversations with my own friends (agh!) who recognize that bi-phobia is not cool but who admit they are bi-phobic nonetheless (they happen to both be lesbian to top it off). How can we possibly think it is acceptable to be prejudiced toward one another because of our sexuality?! Especially as queer people.

I think the fact that they were my friends, and that I was taken aback that they so readily admitted their bi-phobia (mind you we have mutual bi friends!), made it so that I was at a loss for words.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
